The canonical clinician: understanding the life and work ...
Kongress: TCM Kongress 2008 - 39. Internationaler 180 min, eng/deu Inhalt / abstract Zhang Zhongjing is the Eastern Han dynasty author of the Shanghan Zabing Lun commonly referred to as the Treatise on Cold Damage and Complex Disorders. This work is the first and foremost manual and standard in Chinese herbal medicine and is since centuries praised as the forefather of all formula books. But little is know about the author and his life. When examining the last centuries preceding the authoring of the Shanghan Lun, it becomes evident that no extant book even loosely approximates the advanced detail that can be found in Zhang Zhongjing’s writings. So where did this knowledge suddenly come from? What did he study, and for how long? Where did he live? When did he write this book and why? Is he part of a lineage? And what is the construct of his theoretical and clinical mindset? Questions such as these are of pivotal importance to the serious scholar-practitioner trying to study and practice Zhang Zhongjing’s style of canonical clinical medicine. During this afternoon workshop, Dr. Versluys will share his research into this topic and present some answers to the aforementioned questions. The student will be introduced to Zhang Zhongjing as a man, scholar and physician. The nature of the Shanghan Lun will be examined to unveil the author’s motivations and objectives. And a window will open offering glimpse into the life of one of history’s greatest physicians to instill the student of the Zhongjing-style of Chinese medicine with a visceral sense of lineage.

Classical Pathology: The Neijing Nineteen Lines on Pathology
Kongress: TCM Kongress 2006 - 37. Internationaler 390 min, eng/deu Inhalt / abstract Chapter seventy-four of the Great Treatise on the Essence of the Utmost Truth [zhizhen yao dalun] of the Inner Classic of the Yellow Emperor [huangdi neijing] records the most encompassing and original rules in Chinese medicine pathology. The nineteen patterns are considered to be the most authoritative instructions on classical etiopathology. But there is great difficulty in understanding these instructions, since they cannot be researched from merely a more modern Qing dynasty zangfu differentiation standpoint. As such, the only path to full understanding of the lines is an evaluation from all possible angles in classical Chinese medicine. This evaluation will be engaged in by cross-referencing other classics like the Classic of Difficulties [nan jing], as well as later commentaries by masters like Zhang Jingyue, etc. During the course, all nineteen patterns will be studied and explained, providing the participant with a definitive understanding on classical Chinese medicine pathology.
